We are just a few short days away from the 2014 Olympics in Sochi and I personally am extremely excited and proud for our athletes. The Olympic motto "Citius, Altius, Fortius" is Latin for "Faster, Higher, Braver," but is universally accepted to mean "Swifter, Higher, Stronger."
These athletes are chosen very carefully to represent our country as they are considered to be the best of the best in their particular skill and honor the fact that they are to respect the game and the country and location being visited as they do their own. My question is why are we making it out to be anything different than what it is? First, take a second to read the next paragraph taken from thinkquest.org and think of what it means to you...
The Olympic oath is a symbolic gesture of sportsmanship that traces its origins to the 1920 Olympic Games. One athlete from the host country takes an oath at Opening Ceremonies on behalf of all the athletes. The oath is "In the name of all competitors, I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honour of our teams."
Should we not be holding these values close to our hearts and supporting our athletes to the fullest? I'm seeing people buying into all kinds of different controversy on what goes on in these countries, factual or not, and losing touch of what we really should be doing. We have even gone as far as families having to stay home in fear of endangering themselves instead of being able to watch their loved one perform live.
I know I am only a small voice in a very big world, but even the faintest sound can be heard for a distance if spoken by many...... Please support our athletes in what they have set out to achieve which is to do our country proud by taking every possible moment to watch and cheer them on. The fact remains that after all is said and done this is what truly matters right now.
